Aesthetic Nasal Surgery – Rhinoplasty
Since the nose is located right in the middle of the face, it is one of the most important structures in determining the ratios and symmetry in the face. Therefore, the most commonly performed surgery independent of gender in Turkey is nose surgery.
People have different nose shapes and problems. Hence, not the same nose surgery can be carried out for everyone. Sometimes there is only a problem with the nose tip. But in some cases there might be problems with the nose ridge or general problems, which require a correction of the shape. The desired end result for all surgeries is that the nose is in harmony with the face and looks beautiful.
With rhinoplasty the length of the nose can be increased or decreased, big nostrils can be reduced in size, the shape of the nose tip can be changed and the angles created by the nose, forehead and lips can be corrected. During surgery it is also possible to correct cartilage and bone curvatures that cause breathing problems. Rhinoplasty is a two-way operation that provides functional gains besides aesthetic gains.
First Consultation
When you come to your first consultation prior to surgery you need to tell me your exact expectations and wishes.
It is useful to identify those points of your nose that disturb you, via a mirror or photographs, in order for me to better understand your wishes. After I have understood the wishes of my patients, I try to give as much explanatory information as possible about the surgery and the results, in terms they understand.
After that the inside and outside of the nose is examined and plans are made about the surgery.
Surgery
Even though we prefer to carry out the surgery under general anesthesia, it can also be performed under sedation. The procedure takes about 1.5-2 hours. My personal preference is to carry out nose surgeries with open rhinoplasty technique.
In open rhinoplasty surgeries incisions are made in the inside and on the tip of the nose to enter it. Then interventions are made on the cartilages forming the tip of the nose and the upper part of the nose. The cartilages forming the tip of the nose can be shaped as desired and cartilages taken from other parts of the nose can be used for aesthetic and support purposes.
The nasal hump is then filed and by bringing back together the bones, the nasal roof is narrowed. Interventions according to the needs of the nose are carried out. Curvatures in the middle part of the nose such as septum deviation or concha hypertrophy (nasal polyps) are corrected so that difficulty in breathing is also eliminated.
Surgery without Nasal Tampons
In the past, very long tampons were inserted into the nose. This would not only prevent the patient from breathing after the operation, but the removal of the tampons also made the patients very anxious.
Later, the size and shape of the tampons changed and the trauma caused for the patient was minimized. However, in nose surgery without tampons the intranasal spaces are brought close to each other with stitches along the midline. This way the stitches serve as pressure that was previously created by the tampons. In addition it is possible to place silicon into the nose to avoid adhesions that might occur.
Is Rhinoplasty Different in Men?
Technically there is no difference. But bones and cartilages of men are thicker and the chance that the nose experienced a blow in the past is higher.
In women, the nose ridge is slightly curved and the tip of the nose is made at an angle of more than 90 degrees to the lip. In men the nose ridge must be flat and the angle of the nose tip to the lip must be 90 degrees.
After the surgery
After surgery the patient must stay in the hospital for 1 day. The tampons remain for 2 days and to stabilize the nose a plaster called splint is used for a week.
Swelling and bruises can occur around the nose and under the eyes after surgery. After 3-4 days light tasks can be carried out. After 1 week the patient can resume work. For 1 month it is forbidden to do heavy sports and heavy work, to bend over for a long period of time and to use glasses. After 1 month it is possible to resume sportive activities.
It takes approximately 1 year for the new nose shape to set after the surgery. While the swelling on the bone structures go down after 1 month, it takes at least 6 months for the swelling on the nose tip to disappear completely. After surgery the bone cartilages lose their flexibility and it might come to a loss of feeling in the nose tip. Gaining back this flexibility and feeling takes approximately 1 year.
